CRIME PREVENTION
HOME SECURITY
LOCKS, LIGHTS AND MORE
Locks
- Make
sure every external door has a sturdy, well-installed dead bolt lock.
- Sliding
glass doors can be secured with commercially available locks, or by placing
a broom stick or dowel rod in the inside track.
- To
prevent the door being lifted off the track, drill a hole through the
sliding door frame and the fixed frame. Then insert a pin in the hole.
- Lock
windows-Double hung windows can be secured with key locks or by pining them.
- All
outside doors should be metal or solid wood.
- Install
a peephole so you can see who is outside.
Lights
& Exterior
- Install
outside lights and keep them on at night or on a motion detector.
- Keep
your yard clean.
- Trees
and shrubs should be pruned so that they do not hide doors or windows, or
provide access to upper level windows.
- House
numbers should be clearly displayed.
Alarms
- Alarms
can be a good investment.
- Check
with several companies before you buy so you can decide what level of
security you need.
- Learn
to use your system properly.
- Alarm
system should have an audible signal.
There's
More You Can Do
- When
not home, create the illusion that you are. Use timers to turn lights on and
off.
- Leave
shades, blinds and curtains in normal position. Have paper and mail stopped
or picked up by a neighbor.
- Do
not leave keys in "hidden spots". Give an extra key to a neighbor
you trust.
- Make
a list of your valuables and engrave them.
- Do
not leave a message on your answering machine that indicates you are away.
- Join
a Neighborhood Watch Group. For information on the Geneva Eagle Eye Block
Watchers contact the Geneva Police Department.
What
To Do If Your Home Is Burglarized
- If
something looks questionable-a lit screen, a broken window or an open
door-DO NOT GO IN. Contact your local police department from a neighbors
home or public phone.
- Do
not touch anything.
- If
you hear what sounds like someone breaking in, leave safely if you can and
call the police. If you can not leave, lock yourself in a room with a phone
and call the police. If an intruder is in your room, pretend you are asleep.
