Personal Safety
Basic Safety And Street Sense

  • Wherever you are stay alert of your surroundings.
  • Send a message that you're calm, confident, and know where your going.
  • Trust our instincts.
  • Know the neighborhoods where you live and work.
  • Stick to well-lighted, well-traveled streets.
  • Avoid shortcuts, through wooded areas, parking lots or alleys.
  • Don't flash large amounts of cash or other tempting targets like jewelry or clothing.
  • Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside of front pocket.
  • Use automated teller machines in the daytime. Have your card in hand and ready. If you feel uneasy about using the machine or about people in the area, leave.
  • Don't wear shoes or clothing that restricts your movements.
  • Have your car or house keys in hand before you reach the door.
  • When going to your car, check under the car while your approaching it, also check the interior, front and back before entering it. Check even if door was locked.
  • If you think your being followed switch directions or cross the street. Go to a public place where people are.

In Your Car

  • Keep your car in good working condition. Make sure you have enough gas.
  • Always roll up the window and lock the car doors.
  • Avoid parking in isolated areas.
  • If you think someone is following you, don't head home. Drive to the nearest police or fire station, gas stations or their open business to get help.
  • Don't pick up hitchhikers, or hitchhike.
  • Consider having a cellular phone for emergencies.
  • If your car breaks down, remain in the car. Place a "CALL POLICE" sign in your window.
  • If someone stops for assistance, slightly roll down your window and ask them to call the police.

If Someone Tries To Rob You

  • DON'T RESIST. Give up your property, not your life.
  • Report the crime to the police.
