ORDINANCE MODIFYING SELECTED SUBSECTIONS OF CHAPTER 1042 SEWERS
Council has passed legislation changing the sewer use ordinance
ORDINANCE NO. 2961
Grease
Ever hear the sink drain gurgle when it's
drained, or ever have your house sewer line back up? One of the most common
sources for these problems is blockage caused by grease. Grease is a common
by-product of our cooking, whether it be shortening, cooking oil, butter, or
margarine, or in the form of food scraps, sauces, or dairy products. But
whenever these are flushed down the drain or the toilet, they can cause you big
problems. And detergents or de greasers may simply pass the problem further down
your line. Lines can become completely plugged, necessitating mechanical
cleaning or even replacement.
Here are simple suggestions for you the
homeowner to prevent the problem:
- Never put grease down the sink or toilet
- Scrape grease and food scraps from trays, plates, pots, pans, etc. into a can or the trash for disposal
- Do not put grease down garbage disposals. Use baskets or strainers in the sink drain to catch food scraps and other solids and then empty them into the trash
Even the City's large sewer lines can become
plugged by grease, and then many people are affected. It is up to each
individual to help prevent these headaches.

conditions defined in this regulation. The City of Geneva welcomes and
encourages new development and industry to our community.
Treatment is achieved through a trickling filter process, followed by advanced treatment. The effluent is discharged into
Cowles Creek. This stream has been designated by the Ohio EPA as a low
flow, warm water, and salmonoid habitat. This treatment facility
consistently meets the ever-stringent water quality standards imposed by this
receiving stream.
